Nutrition During the Holiday Season

The holiday season is upon us, and for some that means indulging on delicious food and beverages. If you are trying to conceive or are currently pregnant, it is especially important to keep your diet in check. The reproductive specialists at Sher Fertility Institute New York share a few tips to help you stay healthy during the holidays.

  • Eat regularly. Don’t skip meals or snacks to “save room” for the main event at Thanksgiving, or holiday parties. It can affect your blood sugar levels and may lead to heartburn or indigestion.
  • Don’t eat for two. Even if you are pregnant, you don’t need to actually eat for two. It is easy to get caught up piling your plate with all the scrumptious options available, but watch portion sizes. Additionally, try to limit starchy carbs and eat more fruits, veggies, and lean protein.
  • Choose safe foods. Potlucks may lead to foodborne illnesses if foods stay at room temperature for too long. Cold foods need to be kept cold, and hot foods need to stay hot. Turkey and other meats are safe as long as they are cooked thoroughly. While pregnant, remember to avoid unpasteurized dairy products and raw foods.
  • Skip the soda. Sugary drinks are empty calories. Wouldn’t you rather have a small portion of pumpkin pie? Avoiding alcohol is a smart idea even while trying to conceive. Instead, stay hydrated by drinking lots of water, which can also help fill your stomach so you don’t overeat. If you just can’t resist, enjoy a mocktail of sparking water and cranberry juice.
